This trip is designed to emphasize historical and current aspects of our Criminal Justice system compared to that of different countries. This will give students a broader knowledge of the criminal justice system and apply the knowledge they learn abroad to the classroom and their careers as professionals. This program will look at issues of migration, diversity, white-collar crime, criminal justice, economic equality, gender equality, and broader questions about socialism in Scandinavia. Students will engage in experiential learning by visiting government offices and talking with officials. Students participating in the program will also be attending the Stockholm Criminology Symposium, an international conference. Points of interest in Sweden specifically include the low crime and incarceration rates when compared to other advanced industrialized nations, immigration, and the political system in Sweden and the strong representation of women in government. Students will also be meeting with local government officials and working with some nonprofits dealing with immigration issues.
